Beyond the Old Barn Door

In living seasons it is dressed

Through the old barn door I step,
In filtered light through cracks I’m met
And dust is swirled from floors un-swept;
How sweet the smell where hay was kept.

Another world of earthiness,
A good strong scent of timeliness;
A touch of life — a soft caress;
In living seasons it is dressed,
While colors surround the emptiness.

Drawn here by a longing old,
Yet whispers speak the story told;
Of love and life and dreams to hold —
What was inside has now been sold.

But turning, turning, slowly round,
Amidst the dust and hay unbound;
An echo lingers in the silent sound
And shadows flee upon the ground.

Oh, tease the senses with secrets kept,
Of joys and sorrows where gently wept
And pay attention lest we forget
That in their passing we had slept.

And out behind the wooden door
Lies the answers held in store,
But locked away forevermore,
What lies beyond the old barn door.
