Timeline of the Internet

In this blog post I will travel through time to showcase you the vast expansion and development of the Internet and it’s origins. I will start with the year 1989 where it all began.

1989: A man named Tim John Berners-Lee created the ‘Web’. He spent some time in Switzerland where he worked for a company called CERN and this is where he wrote the programming for the world wide web.

1990: Tim John Berners-Lee developed a system called ‘Hypertext Transfer Protocol’ and then went onto design the Universal Resource Identifier system. These were crucial in the internet development stages.

1991: The same man mentioned above (Tim), released his software to research institutions and then made the world wide web available to the general public in the month of August.

1992: First ever text message, also known as an (SMS) was sent by a man named Neil Papworth to Richard Jarvis. The message read ‘Merry Christmas’.

1993: Mosaic was available to the public at this time, making it the most downloaded internet browser.

1994: Full text web and search engines were introduced.

1995: Yahoo! is founded in California

1996: The first email service was launched called hotmail.

1997: There are now over 100,000 websites

1998: Apple invented and released the iMac computer.

1999: Apple release iMovie, an application integrated into the computer.

2000: Playstation 2 was launched in Japan and soon spread across the world.

2001: Wikipedia is launched

2002: Digital TV comes into play instead of the standardised version

2003: ‘Skype’ is released, which enables people to voice call from other sides of the earth for free.

2004: Social media websites such as Flickr and Facebook are launched. Facebook was invented by four men named Mark Zuckerberg, Dustin Moskovitz, Chris Hughes and Eduardo Saverin at Harvard University.

2005: Xbox 360 is launched to the world

2006: Google purchases YouTube

2007: iPhone launches, making a breakthrough in the mobile world.

2008: No more HD DVD’s, instead ‘Blu-Ray’ is brought to attention

2009: All virgin megastores close across the U.S, proving that online music is now becoming more popular

2010: ‘Spotify’ music streaming service is launched

2011: Google wallet and Google+ start to dominate the internet, making online shopping easier

2012: The internet now rises to over 2.1 billion users, a breakthrough in modern technology.

2013: The ‘6 second clip’ video service ‘Vine’ was created by three men named Rus Yusupov, Colin Kroll and Dom Hoffmann.

2014: Amazon acquires Twitch Tv

2015: Pinterest announces the launch of Buyable Pins, a special type of pin that can be used to make purchases within Pinterest itself.

2016: Microsoft says it will be purchasing LinkedIn for $26.2 billion

2017: Vine was shut down due to internet unpopularity.
