9 Acts of Kindness for Someone Who is Grieving

How to help your friends and loved ones through this difficult time

I received a lovely comment from Sharing Words on my article about my top recommended gift to get someone who was grieving. It has inspired today’s article. This is good because I didn’t know what I was going to write about! The comment mentioned other ways to help someone who was grieving. My first thought was those are not gifts those are acts of kindness. You could also call them acts of service. I guess it depends on your perspective though. Because someone’s time or company is also a gift. It is just a different kind of gift and not the material type I had originally been thinking of.

Many churches have a group of volunteers that will go to a bereaved member’s home and assist with chores or provide company. I think this is a wonderful show of love and support. Family and friends can also fill this role. But what are some good acts of kindness for someone who is grieving? Here is a quick list I have put together. I am sure there are other ways that I haven’t thought of as well. It always depends on the person and the situation. Just like with the grief healing process, helping a bereaved person is not one-size-fits-all.

This is a bonus because it is more of a gift than an act of kindness. (Well, it could be seen as both.) Take over a live plant instead of a bouquet. I greatly appreciated the live plants I received after all the deaths in my family. The live plant not only brought beauty into my home but it also breathed life into the home. The live plant can serve as a living memorial for the deceased loved one. Roses are a good choice and can be planted outside. If you know that the bereaved person does not have a green thumb, a cactus, succulent, or bamboo plant is easy to take care of.
