Polish Poster School

What is the Polish Poster School? At first, I thought it was a design school in Poland. But it turns out that it’s actually a terminology that represents Polish poster art between the 1950s through the 1980s. Polish posters are more than just graphic images. It is recognized by its combination of aesthetics of painting and metaphor in the poster. It had made a big contribution to development in graphic design and poster designs.

Polish Poster Arts

Posters above are a few examples of Polish posters that were created during that time. Some of you may have noticed these posters are the recreation of those of American-made movies. The United States created great films after World War II and they were shown all around the world including Poland. However, Poland was under clutches of Soviet bloc at that time which strictly banned US “propaganda” materials. So they ended up producing colorful and quirky Hollywood movies that have very little to do with the actual story of the movie.

Hollywood Movie Posters

Here are the original copies of the posters. You might have awed and started to see some correlation between the two groups of posters. Polish poster art could experience rapid development during that time period because poster art was the only allowed form of individual artistic expression for Polish artists. After the fierce Stalinist rule had been lifted, Polish artists had a room for artistic expression. Because the Soviet state did not give too many restrictions on the look of the poster, they took advantage of it to fully express their potential on film posters where they revealed their emotional involvement with the subject as well as their perspectives on society and issues.

Polish Posters

Polish Poster School had been on the blindside for a long time due to oppression and restriction. Its development was solely made by the passion and desperation of Polish artists who had to express individual artistic presentations through a small piece of the film poster.
