Maybe it was the way I was raised. Maybe it’s my own intuition. Maybe both. Like many others throughout our lives, I’ve only ever sought out the relationships of those whose company I genuinely enjoy.

However, I’ll occasionally meet a rotten egg. They are swiftly dealt with — and with no remorse! Problematic people tend to find themselves out of my life easily.

But sometimes I’ll meet someone who has drastically lower standards. I feel for them, I do. Ultimately though, keeping poor company is a self-inflicted wound. And I like to keep fit.

A properly curated inner circle is one that enables your success, happiness, and well-being. One that provides the means for true vitality.

Here are the four traits of highly toxic people you should avoid at all costs:

It was high school debate when I heard the phrase that “early is on time and on time is late.” I’ve taken this mindset with me into adulthood. So show the fuck up.

We all have that one friend who is late to everything. This isn’t about them. A quick fix, tell them to show up an hour earlier to the function and all is good.

This is about the serial killer of your time. The time you could’ve spent elsewhere, and in better company.

In college, I knew a guy who had the potential to be a great friend. We had several insightful conversations together. Smart dude, but a total flake.

Bail out on plans with the group once, twice, three times, that’s OK. That’s life. And in college, we have the swings of exam season and its antecedent preparations — and at a high frequency!

But when plans continue to fall through, even in collective downtime, is when ties ought to be cut. This guy didn’t want to hang out anymore. And we can give him the benefit of the doubt that there might have been background context the rest of the friend group was unaware of.
