Graduate Retention Rates of Top Louisiana Colleges

Recent high school graduates have no shortage of Louisiana schools to choose from to further their education. Many students look at a school’sl acceptance rate to see if they are likely to be accepted, but few look at the graduation rates of those schools.

Students look for schools with an acceptance rate that is high enough to give them at fair shot of acceptance, but not so high that it makes them look bad. There is an often misconception that high acceptance rates mean the school is not strong academically or challenging enough.

Campuses such as Southeastern Louisiana University (SLU) get a bad reputation solely because of their acceptance and graduation rates. Southeastern accepts 88% of applicants while only 41% of those students who attend graduate. With only 41% of students graduating, students are appalled by such low number and think that it’s poor performance. Something not considered, is that as stated numerous times by SLU admissions, “We strive to give everyone the chance to succeed.”

SLU admissions requirements are more relaxed than other universities, since they strive to give more people the opportunity to excel in college. The middle 50% of students accepted by SLU have an ACT score between 19 and 24 while other schools such as Louisiana State University(LSU) are significantly more restrictive. The middle 50% of students accepted by LSU have scores ranging from 23–28.

With LSU’s higher scores, the acceptance rate is significantly less at 73 percent. Their graduation rate is much higher at 67%. LSU may have more students graduating, but it is most likely due to their more restrictive admissions requirements.

Another popular college is the University of Louisiana at Lafayette(ULL), which is one of the top three Louisiana schools by size, along with LSU and Southeastern. ULL accepts only 50% of its applicants and of those that attend 44% graduate. ULL is significantly more selective than LSU or Southeastern, which generally would imply a higher graduation rate. Instead, ULL’s graduation rate is only 3% higher than SLU, which is drastically more selective.
