Is Honesty Really the Best Policy?

What might be my greatest strength is also my biggest downfall.

I am an honest person. A good person. Nice, perhaps, as well. When I write, it is an extension of myself, therefore by default my writing is honest.

This has proven to be a problem.

As soon as I started, I realized the major flaw in my idea — my honesty.

I couldn’t not write the truth. And truth, apparently, offends a lot of people. Especially the truth about the people themselves.

The problem is that the truth to me doesn’t necessarily align with the truth to someone else. Our truths are basically nothing more than our opinions, no matter how accurate we feel those opinions might be.

All of this presented me with an impossible conundrum. Being honest would hurt people’s feelings. As a good, nice person, this meant I couldn’t be honest. The catch? As an honest person, I can’t write without honesty. End result? I can’t write.

Thus is the (very short) story of the beginning and the end of my blogging career.

Except that it isn’t.

One of my other great strengths (or downfalls) is that I am stubborn. I refuse to be defeated by my own personal catch-22.

I still write in my blog, though much more sporadically than I’d hoped. My stories and words are carefully chosen to avoid as much collateral damage as possible. I have almost as many stories languishing in my drafts folder as I have been brave enough to publish.
