Peer Interview And Story

In class on February 10, I interviewed Andy Saltsman about a mission trip that he took with Atlas Abroad over winter break to Costa Rica. Saltsman, a sophomore transfer student majoring in Digital Media and Journalism with a concentration in Video Editing, served overseas at a Soccer Camp for children for 6–12-year-olds, where they learned basic drills and techniques as well as the gospel. One of the most significant lessons that he learned during the trip was how much God provided him with energy and strength even when he was sleeping and eating.

One of the aspects that Saltsman found the most edifying was the fact that God provided him with energy and strength even when he was sleeping and eating much less than he had before the trip, and was still able to actively and passionately engage in his responsibilities at the camp. He stated that he was able to learn a lot about himself during the trip, being away from all of the comforts and distractions that we often take for granted, really allowed him to grow spiritually while giving young children the Gospel message. Saltsman identified the language barrier as the most challenging aspect of the trip, as even simple communication had to be done through an interpreter, both if he wanted to say something to the kids, and if the kids wanted to say something to him.

He greatly enjoyed the opportunity to serve with his Atlas Abroad, and how much he was inspired by getting to serve with such passionate and dedicated believers. He hopes to have another opportunity to serve outside the United States, whether with Atlas or another missions group. One of the final thoughts that Saltsman gave is that he learned how much your presence is appreciated even when you are not able to communicate verbally because of a language barrier.
