Spirituality in Rehab

Many people confuse spirituality and religion. When it comes to understanding spirituality in rehab it's important to understand the difference between the two. Spirituality is defined as a personal search for meaning in life. Unlike religion where it is mostly about right and wrong, spirituality is asking ¨where do I find personal meaning, value, and connection?¨ The word spirit is actually from Latin and means ¨breath¨. So how does ¨breath¨and rehab go together?

Addiction has many reasons. But deep down it comes from a lack of connection to oneself. Not being in tune with yourself, your values, wants, needs and boundaries can lead you down many different paths. Solely focusing on your addiction during rehab without connecting to your inner self causes you to lose focus on what is truly important. Spirituality helps guide you through your deep inner emotions and thought processes. Spirituality is all about changing, growing, and evolving. The great thing about spirituality is that it is subjective. It depends on the individual to define what spirituality means to them. Spirituality unlike religion can´t be found in a church or temple. It is something found deep within each of us. It can be especially useful for those suffering from addiction.

There are various ways to tap into spirituality and your inner world both in and out therapy:

Yoga: Yoga uses breathing techniques, exercise, and meditation.

Meditation: It’s about training in awareness and getting a healthy sense of perspective.

Practicing Mindfulness: The ability to be present, to rest in the here and now, fully engaged with whatever we’re doing in the moment.

Journaling: Journaling helps control your symptoms and improve your mood by helping you prioritize problems, fears, and concerns.

Spending time outdoors
